El Rock nació a mediados del siglo XX en Estados Unidos como una convergencia de géneros afroamericanos como el rhythm and blues, el blues y el gospel, combinados con el country. Caracterizado por una instrumentación centrada en la guitarra eléctrica, el bajo y la batería, junto a una métrica marcada de 4/4 y una actitud contestataria, el rock evolucionó en las décadas de 1960 y 1970 hacia subgéneros como el hard rock, el rock psicodélico y el rock progresivo, transformándose en la fuerza cultural y estética más influyente de la música popular del siglo XX.
El Rock Alternativo, por su parte, emergió a finales de los años 70 y cobró fuerza en los 80 desde el ámbito underground, las radios universitarias y sellos discográficos independientes. Surgió como una respuesta contracultural a la comercialización del rock anglosajón convencional. Caracterizado por distorsiones de guitarra inusuales, afinaciones experimentales, letras introspectivas o de protesta social y una estética de autogestión (DIY), el género dio el salto definitivo al consumo masivo a comienzos de la década de 1990, redefiniendo las reglas de la industria discográfica mundial.
